LANCASTER water polo players Alex Rutlidge and Beckie Kershaw have recently helped Great Britain achieve a creditable seventh place in the European Championships which took place in Eindhoven.

The British Gas GBR Women’s Team became the first British team since 1997 to compete at the European Championships following a successful qualification campaign in 2011.

Eight nations contested the women’s competition which comprised a round-robin stage of two groups before knock-out matches decided the final positions.

The British women took the Netherlands, Hungary and Russia in Group A and Group B included Greece, Italy, Germany and Spain.

Great Britain 9

Hungary 19

IN their first game the British women put in a brave performance against major championship regulars Hungary, before were ultimately beaten 19–9.

Despite having an early advantage GB lost a bit of confidence and could not capitalise on their possession.

After taking an early lead GB fell behind as Hungary wrestled their way back into the match and quickly built momentum, pulling away to 4-1 at the first break.

As the match progressed GB struggled to contain the Hungarian attack which added four goals to their tally to lead 8-4 at half-time.

Hungary put the result beyond doubt with four unanswered goals in the opening four minutes of the third quarter.

With Alex and Beckie both contributing GB regained some form, again a penalty and further goals meant they approached the final quarter trailing 15-7. However, Hungary were ruthless to the end and added four more goals.
