Tyson Fury’s historic win over Wladimir Klitschko has seen him honoured with a prestigious award.
The Ring magazine, renowned as the bible of boxing, has named the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world their Fighter of the Year for 2015 after he dethroned the Ukrainian great on November 28.
The publication noted that Fury, just the second British fighter to win the award after Ricky Hatton, had “breathed energy into a lifeless division” and “turned boxing’s traditional glamour division upside down” with his wide points win out in Dusseldorf.
The former British, European and Commonwealth heavyweight champion’s victory inflicted a first defeat on Klitschko in 11 years as Fury lifted the RING, IBF, WBA and WBO titles.
His triumph was also named Upset of the Year by the magazine.
Fury said: “I can’t believe I’ve just won Ring magazine Fighter of the Year. I’m so flattered.”
The other finalists for the award were Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin, Roman Gonzalez and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
