A blend of youth and experience helped Heysham Atoms’ A team pick up where the first team left off with another 50-point haul for the club against Runcorn.

Man of the match Ben Dorrington had a day to remember, scoring four tries as he returned the club after two seasons away, helping the Atoms to a 56-12 win.

He scored the opener after an excellent handling move before Jamie Cottle, another returning Atom, set up Dave McVernon to score.

Dorrington then added his second under the posts before second row Chris Strachan scored a popular try.

Dorrington had his hat-trick on the half hour, adding his fourth soon after. Runcorn did get on the scoresheet before the break but it was 34-6 at the interval to the Atoms.

In the second half, Cottle scored two tries before Strachan scored his second to take the Atoms close to the 50-point mark.

Shane Weed then scored from close range taking a short pass Andy Helme pass before Runcorn completed the scoring with their second of the game.

There was also success for the Heysham Atoms’ under 13s who beat South Trafford Raiders 34-0.

The youngsters ran in six tries with Callum Brodie scoring a hat-trick.

Henry Connolly, who had a fine day on the kicking front, was also on the scoresheet, with Jake Baron and Connor McGuinness also touching down.

Man of the match honours went to Henry Higginson as Heysham ensured a shutout on the day.
