Steve Davis to unveil new snooker centre in Lancaster

SIX-TIMES World Snooker Champion and one of the greatest ever to play the game, Steve Davis, is coming to Lancaster.

'The Nugget' will officially open the city's new snooker and pool centre, Rack 'Em, on Saturday, February 27.

Davis, who dominated the golden age of snooker in the 1980s, will also give local people the chance to take him on over a one-frame challenge.

He will play 10 frames in all on the night and his opponents will include one of the district's top players, James Silverwood.

Three winners from weekly Sunday competitions at Rack 'Em, being played in the run-up to the big night, will also play Steve, as will six lucky people who purchase tickets to see the event.

Davis won his first World Snooker Championship in 1981 and his last in 1989.

In between, he reigned supreme as the world's number one player and engaged in classic matches with Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White and of course, his legendary 'black ball' World Final with Dennis Taylor in 1985 - which pulled a record post-midnight BBC2 audience of 18.5 million.

Today, Davis is a popular BBC TV snooker commentator and even now, aged 52, is ranked number 23 in the world.

He also appears on TV from time to time playing pool and poker.

Tickets, priced 10, to see Steve Davis are on sale now behind the bar at Rack 'Em, Church Street, Lancaster, or call 01524 842900.

The event starts at 7.30pm.
