MORECAMBE picked up an excellent point against league leaders Southend to maintain their unbeaten away record in League 2.
Jim Bentley’s side were made to fight all the way after being reduced to 10 men on 74 minutes when goalscorer Phil Jevons was sent off for an off the ball incident involving Southend’s Anthony Grant.
Jevons had fired the Shrimps into the lead on 52 minutes after great link up play with Lewis Alessandra on the edge of the Southend area before producing a cool finish past Glenn Morris.
The Shrimps then went close to adding a second when Laurence Wilson just over hit a pass to play in Jevons for a second five minutes later.
Jevons then saw red and that signalled a late onslaught from the home side. Grant curled an effort just wide and Barry Roche produced a superb save from a near`post cross that was deflected towards the bottom left hand corner.
Bilel Mohsni then volleyed inches wide from close range before Morecambe’s resistance was finally broken six minutes from time when Sean Clohessy’s right wing cross was volleyed past his own keeper..
The first half saw few chances. Garry Hunter had an effort saved by Glenn Morris in the fourth minute and Andy Parrish volleyed well over at the far post after a superb Laurence Wilson cross.
Southend struggled to get into the game until midway through the half when they forced a string of corners but lacked a goal threat as Morecambe defended superbly.
