Shrimps punished after Roche error
York City 1 Morecambe 0
A GAFFE from keeper Barry Roche condemned the Shrimps to a 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to York City on Saturday.
A 20-yard free kick from David McDermott with 10 minutes to go went through Roche's legs when he looked to have the shot covered.
The win was deserved as York had the best of the first-half, Roche being called into action on several occasions.
Roche was powerless to stop an effort from Brodie which came back off the post and was cleared.
Morecambe did put together some neat passing moves to entertain the small number of travelling Shrimps fans but seldom threatened the York City goal.
The Shrimps gave a runout to a number of triallists in the second-half including Jake Simpson, recently released by Shrewsbury Town, and son of former Manchester City player and ex-Shrews manager Paul Simpson, and Stuart Hendrie, brother of ex-England and Aston Villa star Lee.
Afterwards Sammy McIlroy played down Roche's error, saying: "These things happen. It's better making (mistakes) in pre-season friendlies."
McIlroy also praised new signing Paul Scott.
"He did very, very well. He and Andy Parrish were probably the best players out there."
Attendance: 579
Morecambe: Roche, Moss, Parrish, Scott, Wilson, Duffy, Drummond, Stanley, Rundle, Mullin, Jevons
Subs included Walker, Simpson, Hendrie, Hunter, Mannix
