Dan set to take on the All Blacks

A former Carnforth High pupil is one of 23 players to be selected to play against the New Zealand Maori All Blacks this Saturday.

Dan Baines, who started out at the Vale of Lune and now plays for Championship side Rotherham, will be part of the Championship Select XV taking on the Maoris at Doncaster’s Castle Park on November 17.

“It’s a great honour to be selected for this game,” said Dan.

“Whether starting or coming off the bench, I’m looking forward to getting amongst the Maori’s. They are a big physical unit but that’s something we are used to in the Championship.”

Dan, in his third season with Rotherham, moved from back row to hooker last season and has recently had interest from several Premiership clubs.

He said: “I’m playing with a good squad of lads at Rotherham and am still learning and growing in the role of hooker and hopefully if I continue to play well and stay fit that interest will still be there.”

Dan came through the mini and junior sections at the Vale, playing in the first team for a couple of seasons before joining division one club Macclesfield for three years. He has played in two Bill Beaumont cup finals for Lancashire at Twickenham, winning on both occasions, and was honoured with two England Counties tours to France and Canada.

Also selected to face the Maoris is former Vale of Lune prop forward Alan Paver who now plies his trade with Championship team Cornish Pirates.

The game is being shown live on Sky Sports at noon immediately preceding the England against Australia international.
