THE Trimpell 20 Mile road race, run this year from the Salt Ayre Sports Centre, took place on March 6, and proved more popular than ever with 388 finishers. The conditions could not have been better for this long and challenging race, with runners enjoying the early March sunshine and barely a breath of wind.

The course was well supported and the marshals were friendly and helpful as always.

The race attracts athletes from all over the North West who use the 20 mile course as a timely preparation for London and other spring marathons.

The favourable conditions made for some fast times and excellent performances from Lancaster and Morecambe AC members, most of whom were indeed in training for marathon races including in Belfast.

The first runner home for the club was Allan Gordon, who finished in 9th place overall in a fantastic time of 1:59:10. This was Allan’s first race over this distance, and bodes well for a fast marathon later in the year. Allan was followed by Tony Jewitt who finished strongly in 13th place in the V40 category in a very respectable 2:10:27.

The first lady to finish from the club was Becky Butterfield who ran strongly to complete the familiar course in 2:37:50. The second lady runner home was Cath Mossop.

This was Cath’s first attempt at this distance and she finished with a well deserved time of 3:17:49, which was well inside the time that she had set out to achieve. Both ladies were using the race as a good warm-up for the London Marathon in April.

Other Lancaster and Morecambe AC finishers were: Tim Padfield 2:43:20, Gregory Lambert 2:50:33, Colin Hewitt 2:55:15 and Richard Stapleton 3:40:36.

The next race to be held at Salt Ayre and organised by Lancaster and Morecambe AC is the popular Three Bridges 10k, scheduled for 11am on Sunday, April 3.
