Tyson Fury sets New York fight date

Tyson Fury celebrates defeating Kevin Johnson in Belfast on Saturday.

Tyson Fury’s next fight will be at Madison Square Garden in New York on March 17 next year.

The Morecambe-based heavyweight’s trainer and uncle Peter Fury announced the St Patrick’s Day date on Twitter on Wednesday night.

He listed Tomasz Adamek, Chris Arreola, Bermane Stiverne, Johnathon Banks and Shannon Briggs as possible opponents for the unbeaten 24-year-old’s American debut.

Peter Fury tweeted: “Tyson next out Madison square Garden march 17th. Training camp Canada starts jan 14th. Poss opponents Adamek” Arriola Stiverne Banks. Briggs.”

Of the possible opponents, Arreola and Stiverne are the most interesting as the pair face off in the ‘final’ WBC heavyweight title eliminator in Los Angeles on January 26.

That means any March bout with Fury would either decide who gets the next shot at Vitali Klitschko, or if the Ukrainian retires to enter politics, be for the vacant WBC belt.

The news also puts talk of a British heavyweight clash between Fury, who extended his undefeated record to 20 fights with a dominant points victory over Kevin Johnson in Belfast on Saturday, and Liverpool rival David Price on ice.

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy reportedly this week turned down an offer of £650,000 from Price’s manager Frank Maloney to make the fight happen.
