The Lancaster-based Pedal Heaven rider came in just behind Alex Dowsett in Stockton-on-Tees as the reigning champion won an unprecedented fifth title.

Gullen, who came home in 56:54832 more than a minute behind Dowsett, said: “Mega happy to come away with silver.

“Thanks for all the messages and to Pedal Heaven and everyone involved for their support this season.”

Red-hot favourite Dowsett was last to set off, but his victory never looked in doubt from the moment his first lap time was recorded – a blistering 13.42.

The 27-year-old has only been beaten by Sir Bradley Wiggins - the champion in 2014 - since claiming his first title in 2011.

Gullen’s recent successes include triumphing in the North West Regional Road Race Championships and winning a stage of eight-day Irish race An Post Rás, where he also finished ninth overall.

Elsewhere, Gullen’s team mate Jack Pullar came home second in the Ilkley Cycle Races last week.

The Bolton-le-Sands rider came in behind popular local winner Scott Thwaites.

Pullar is helping to organise the first ever Tour of Lancashire Sportive this Sunday, July 3.

The non-competitive challenge will give riders the option of two routes, 100 miles and 62 miles, that will take in the Oakenclough, Dolphinholme and Bashall Eaves circuits.

On each circuit, riders will be able to challenge themselves to a hot lap, as well as being able to tackle climbs such as the Trough of Bowland and Hall Hill leaving Whitewell.

At the end every rider will finish with a lap of the University of Central Lancashire criterium track.

You can ride the tour in a group, with friends or others with the challenge observing the highway code.

Entry is £25 on the day with the event getting underway at 9am.
