The Lancaster-based rider put in a lone move on the sixth and final climb and the stellar time trialist looked set for a memorable victory at one point.

But Preston’s Ian Bibby and Matt Holmes, of Madison Genesis, managed to bridge across with Gullen’s Pedal Heaven team mate Will Fox in tow.

Bibby would then pip Fox to victory on the line as he took his second Motorpoint Spring Cup victory of the year.

The result means Gullen sits third in the standings ahead of the fifth and final round, the Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday.

Bolton-le-Sands’ Jack Pullar, eighth overall, grabbed ninth spot to ensure Pedal Heaven backed up victory in the Tour of the Reservoir with another superb team performance.
