Morecambe’s Dave Chisnall exited the Ladbrokes World Darts Championships in dramatic fashion at the hands of Simon Whitlock on Thursday afternoon.

In a classic back and forth last 16 match at the Alexandra Palace the Australian eventually ran out a 4-3 winner after coming out on top 5-3 in the final set.

Whitlock edged the first set 3-2 after Chisnall missed a 170 finish in the deciding leg and the Australian took out double 10.

The Morecambe man then levelled the round three match at one set all winning the second 3-1.

The two darters then exchanged three whitewash 3-0 sets, meaning the Wizard of Oz was 3-2 to the good in sets.

Chisnall kept up the drama, missing three darts to level the match in set six before eventually taking it to make it 3-3 and take the match in to a deciding seventh set.

Chizzy looked down and out at 2-0 down in the final set but pulled it back to 2-2 and with the match needed to be won by two clear legs, he broke Whitlock’s throw only to see the Australian break straight back with a 152 check out and win the next to lead 4-3 in legs.

And after Chisnall missed 144 to level the set, the Australian hit double tops to take the match and move in to the quarter-finals.
