MORECAMBE ended 2011 with an entertaining draw against in-form Burton.

Former Aberdeen man Gary McDonald was their goal hero with an equaliser just after the hour as Jim Bentley’s side let slip a first half lead.

Morecambe started brightly with Andy Fleming forcing Ross Atkins into a flying save with an excellent drive from 20 yards that was heading for the top left hand corner.

Burton began to find their feet after a sluggish start and Barry Roche was called into action to make an excellent save from Calvin Zola who drilled in a low shot from an acute angle. Billy Kee then headed over a Chris Palmer cross from close range when he looked set to score.

The Shrimps broke the deadlock just after the half hour with Lewis Alessandra scoring a goal of top quality as he curled an effort from the left hand side of the box that beat Atkins and went in off the bottom of the left hand post.

That lead lasted just seven minutes as Burton equalised with a huge slice of luck. Kee’s free kick looked set to be going wide but Nick Fenton could only manage to divert the ball into his own goal.

From there Roche was forced into another good save from a Zola effort and the half ended with Jason Price testing Atkins as the Burton keeper did well to claw an effort away for a corner.

Burton completed their turnaround on 53 minutes when they took the lead through the ever dangerous Zola. Chris Palmer floated in a free kick from the right, the ball was headed back across goal and Zola was on hand to bundle the ball over the line from close range.

The Shrimps then hit back strongly and McDonald gave them a well earned point with a fine goal on 68 minutes. The midfielder took the ball 25 yards out and let fly with a low drive that beat Atkins to his right hand side.

Both sides had chances to win the game but both keepers remained strong and settled for the point.
