Westgate’s unbeaten start to the season came to crashing halt at the hands of the champions Arnside after a destructive and impressive run-chase.

Arnside won the crucial toss and inevitably inserted Westgate with showers forecast for the afternoon.

It took just eight minutes before the first rain delay reduced the game by 12 overs.

Despite this Westgate were able to get off to a good start with skipper Andy Hill (56) continuing his impressive run of form.

Contributions from the middle order from Dave Hannigan (16), Aaron Pearce (18) and Garry Tattersall (16) helped to set the scene for a big knock from Steve Creed.

At 103-4 the game was in the balance but Creed (51 not out) took the attack to the Arnside bowlers and reached a sublime half century off just 34 balls, including nine fours and a six.

At 187 after 39 overs Westgate opted to declare in order to make the overs equal for both sides, in an attempt to take out the rain draw. This was thwarted as another downpour at tea lost four more overs.

Arnisde came out of the blocks with a whirlwind start from O Richardson-Hogg (39) who scooped three sixes into the rugby field before he fell to A Nisbet (1-21).

The score went from 46-0 to 46-2 and Westgate were arguably just in the box seat.

However, this is as good as it got for the home team. Craig Baron (71 not out) and A Lee (66 not out) began circumspectly early on and both survived a few big shouts from the bowlers, but once they got in, it was all one way traffic.

A magnificent unbroken stand of 142 in just 19 overs brought Arnside to victory within 30 overs as six bowlers were tried. Baron’s knock included five huge sixes and seven fours and Lee’s one six and nine fours.
