The Morecambe ace hit a timely 180 in the deciding leg of their game after the five-time World Champion had missed one dart for the match at the Westpoint Arena.

Premier League newcomer Chisnall moved on to four points with his second draw and sits in eighth place in the table with van Barneveld retaining his spot in the top four.

Chisnall said: “It was a point lost in my opinion, but that’s darts.

“I was scoring well but I went off the boil a little bit at the wrong time and maybe I was lucky to get a point, but there’s still another four games so we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.”

Van Barneveld said: “At the end of the day I’m happy with the point.

“Sometimes if you lead 6-5 you can be devastated with a point you’ve given away but to be honest Dave should have won and I found the point.”

After going 1-0 down Chisnall produced to 180s two level things up.

The pair then shared legs three and four, Chisnall missing two darts at double 15 before taking the latter.

Van Barneveld took out 72 for a 3-2 lead but Chisnall checked out on tops to bring it back to 3-3.

The Morecambe ace broke for the first time at 4-3 but couldn’t take advantage, missing three darts for a two-leg lead before the Dutch great levelled things up.

Chisnall finished on 110 to break throw again in leg nine but van Barneveld made it four straight legs against the throw to bring the game back to 5-5.

The five-time world champion then held throw for a 6-5 lead to guarantee a point and despite being first to a finish after a 180 couldn’t press home the advantage, Chisnall hitting his fifth maximum and taking out 57 to snatch a point.

Elsewhere Simon Whitlock claimed his first win of the season against Robert Thornton 7-5 while Gary Anderson condemned Phil Taylor to a fourth defeat of the campaign by the same score.

In addition to Chisnall-van Barneveld there were two other draws on the night with Peter Wright sharing the spoils with Thornton, who pulled double duty due to Wes Newton’s illness, and Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis also ending all square.

The players now move onto the Coral UK Open at the Butlins Minehead Resort.

Chisnall enters the ITV-televised tournament against Justin Pipe on Friday evening.
