MORECAMBE Car Club’s annual (night) road rally – sponsored this year by Regent Motors was a reminder to competitors of what real road rallying used to be like during the halcyon days of the 1970’s when crews who were fortunate to be classed as finishers arrived totally exhausted.
Forty-five crews assembled at Burton (M6) Services for the midnight start of the 120mile rally.
This year’s event was held entirely on O.S. map 97 – reducing the responsibility of navigators to keep changing their maps.
However, this certainly didn’t detract from the skills needed of those in the left-hand seats of the competing cars – organisers had produced an intricate route requiring 100% concentration from both crew members – especially when it came to locating some of the unsurfaced, narrow tracks en-route.
As required by MSA registered clubs, the organisers made maximum effort to thoroughly P.R the entire route prior to the event, obtaining proof of visiting all residents where the event passed.
Popular winners were Tim/Leigh Powley (Nissan Sunny, seeded at 11) – their father Roger Powley used to successfully compete in a Porsche 911 many years ago, and was seeded ahead of the eventual winners at No10 in his Proton Coupe along with Max Freeman on the maps – finishing in 2nd overall – making the rally a family affair.
Highest placed M.C.C. member was Pete Tyson/Neil Harrison (Mini Cooper ‘S’, seeded at Number four), the crew finishing 5th overall and taking the award for Best MCC Crew.
