Carnforth ran hosts Newton-le-Willows close in their opening game of 2014.
The fifth in the table Merseyside side were expecting an easier ride from their lowly visitors but it took a late penalty to see them take the five points with Carnforth having been 24-12 to the good at one point.
It hadn’t looked like it was going to be a close run thing early on however, with Newton two tries and 12-0 to the good inside eight minutes.
Carnforth had other ideas however with Phil Metcalfe scoring out wide on the left after good work from Dan Helme, Jack Edmondson and Andy Collins. Collins was to the fore again 10 minutes later, an excellent break followed by a crossfield kick allowing Edmondson to reduce the arrears to 12-10 at half-time.
The visitors went ahead five minutes after the interval, Edmondson powering over for his second with the conversion added. And it was to get even better for Carnforth with 25 minutes remaining, Shannon Morgan scored under the posts with Edmondson’s conversion stretching the lead to 24-12. Carnforth couldn’t add the killer score however and with the home support behind them a loose kick resulted in scrappy try that reduced the arrears to seven.
Another Newton try despite the best efforts of Kieron Morgan saw them move two behind with six minutes to play and the afternoon was to end in heartbreak for Carnforth. The home kicker found his kicking books to seal the victory with a penalty as Carnforth went back up the M6 with two points knowing it could have been more.
