Lancaster Hockey Club’s first team started the new season with a 2-0 win over Brooklands Poynton 2s.
Several new team members in Fiona Crackles, Laura Hayton, Heather Andrew, Annie Park and Eve Park slotted into the team as they picked up a fine opening day victory.
The changes might have had something to do with Lancaster’s nervous start as they missed several opportunities for an early goal as they dominated play.
It may have been goalless at half-time but Lancaster opened the scoring with a beautiful goal shortly after the interval.
Ali Standeven provided the cross for Nicola Benson who converted into the corner of the net.
With a 1-0 lead Lancaster’s confidence grew and the second goal came from a short corner.
Brooklands saved the first strike by captain Grace Robertson but the second shot from Hayton was slipped in to the bottom right corner of the goal.
Good defensive work from Mollie Harrison, Heather Andrew, Laura Hayton, Emma Reid and Eve Park with several impressive saves from Leighan Bleasdale meant the back door was firmly shut.
The midfield trio made up of Benson, Robertson and Nina Swarbrick linked well with both defence attack as Lancaster made a confident start to what could be an exciting season for the club.
lLancaster’s Under 16 side started their National Championship competition with an away triangular competition against Marton Furness and Springfields.
The opening game against Marton Furness saw some fast-paced and skilful hockey with Faye Ledward leading the Lancaster side.
It took until the second half for Lancaster to get the only goal of the game from Fiona Crackles as they won 1-0.
The second game was less successful with a 3-0 defeat against an organised Springfields side.
