Lancaster Hockey Club’s third team steered themselves clear of relegation trouble with a thumping 6-0 win Witton Warriors Ladies 1s.

Kelly Kane scored a second hat-trick in two weeks to fire the city ladies up to a final place of fifth in the Lancashire Central Women’s Hockey Association Division 1 and safe from the dreaded drop.

Five teams were in relegation trouble at the start of the day but Lancaster took the game to the hosts from the off, Jo Higgs finding the back board to give the visitors an early lead.

A flurry of short corners led to Kane converting her first from the top of the D before Higgs added her second for 3-0.

Despite 10 minutes in the sin bin for Cairine Scullion another strike from Kane gave Lancaster a 4-0 lead at half-time.

The visitors picked up from where they left off in the second period, Anya Briggs feeding Eve Dodd for goal number five.

Kane then completed the win, and back-to-back hat-tricks, with a thunderous strike from another short corner.

It was heartbreak for Lancaster’s fourth team however who missed out on promotion from the Lancashire Central Women’s Hockey Association Division 3 despite a 2-1 win over top of the league and already promoted Lytham St Annes Ladies 3s.

The city side needed a win with either a three-goal difference to guarantee promotion or a two-goal lead to enter a play-off.

Lytham took an early lead but Megan Rawes levelled after the break before Jess Burrows put Lancaster in front.

A fine victory wasn’t enough as Lancaster agonisingly finished third.
