A Lancaster golfing star of the future helped Lancashire begin the defence of their Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League title in style.
Adam Stone stole the show on debut as the Red Rose breezed to an emphatic 15-3 victory over Cumbria at a gale-lashed Royal Birkdale on Saturday.
The 17-year-old Lancaster Royal Grammar School pupil combined with Royal Lytham’s Henry Tomlinson to eclipse Ulverston pair Craig Morrow and Andrew Edwards 3&1 in the foursomes before dispatching the latter 5&4 in the afternoon.
The Lancaster member, who plays off scratch, was the first member of the club to represent Lancashire at senior level since Bob Whiteside in 1977.
Stone was also in action at the Lancashire Boys Championship at Ashton and Lea Golf Club the following day, shooting 76.
Harry Borland was the best of the Lancaster finishers on the Preston course, carding an excellent round of 74 in tough conditions that saw the event reduced to a single round.
Delamere Forest’s Haydn McCullen took the title with a level par round of 71.
