MORECAMBE Car Club’s annual Mitchells of Lancaster Morecambe Road Rally has rightly become one of the most challenging road rallies on the northern callendar.
This year’s event continued to provide both a testing competitive route but with added mileage of loose-surfaced tracks – much over private land which allowed crews to test their mettle and car preparation to the limit.
After a year on the sidelines, past clerk-of-course Ashley Hodge once again held the reins and provided a route which used every facet a rally crew could wish for.
Ashley also obtained support from C&M Motors (Galgate), New Inn (Wray), Armstrong Builders Merchants (Bentham) and A&I Harrison (Bentham).
Last year’s winners Alex Willan/Ali Proctor were seeded at number one in their rapid Proton and led the field away from the 11pm Bentham start.
Crews tackled a selection of lanes around the local fells before heading to Curwen Hall and then over the Oyston estate, past the wind turbines and down over Haylots.
It was here that the proton of Dan Willan/Nick Bloxham really turned the proverbial ‘wick’ up and emerged with a comfortable lead – which they held until the end – despite being pressured by his brother Alex in a similar vehicle, their two cars entering the Woodacre ford only seconds apart!
