Kirkby Lonsdale visited Carlisle on Saturday and were beaten 13-10 in a closely fought North One West encounter.
Carlisle opened the scoring with a Glen Weightman penalty before a clean catch led to a forward drive and although Kirkby resisted well they couldn’t prevent the try and Weightman’s conversion extended Carlisle’s lead to 10-0.
Winger Jack Dickinson was then prominent in a move which culminated in Kirkby number six Alan Robinson scoring Kirkby’s first try wide out on the left.
Into the wind and rain Tom Pickthall made a valiant but unsuccessful attempt with the conversion and the half time whistle came with the score at 10-5.
Kirkby drew level early in the second half when Gavin Barton weighted a lovely kick through Carlisle and Matt Belshaw out-sprinted the Carlisle cover to dive on the ball for a try out by the right corner flag. The conversion as missed.
As the game itself drew to a close a draw would have been a fair result but Carlisle were awarded a penalty from a ruck in centre field and around 15 metres out from the Kirkby posts.
Weightman nervelessly slotted the kick to seal the victory.
