A Morecambe schoolboy has enjoyed the trip of a lifetime representing Great Britain in Guatemala.

Lancaster Royal Grammar School student Michael Sallis made the trip to Central America for the World Biathle Championships.

The 15-year-old finished an excellent 11th in a very strong Group B boys’ race in which most of the competitors were a year older.

Biathle is a sport that involves a run, swim and run with continuous transitions like in triathlon.

The race length in Michael’s age group is usually a 200m swim and 2km run.

Michael’s father David Sallis said: “The opportunity to represent the country at an event like this is a very proud moment and one which was not lost on Michael.

“In particular the opportunity to experience a culture vastly different from our own made it an amazing life experience for all of the parents and children involved.”

Just before travelling to Guatemala, Michael won the Yorkshire Biathlon Championships which allows him to enter the National Biathlon Championships and potentially the National Schools Biathlon Championships.

It was won in a very close competition against a strong opposition and again gives him the opportunity to compete at national level.
