Lee stars at both ends for Marsh
THE Sam Price Cup final on April 27 at Giant Axe will see familiar rivals Storeys and Marsh United do battle after they won their semi-finals at the weekend.
Marsh United had to beat both bad luck and Highgrove to reach the final. They lost midfielder Dave Shorrocks with a badly broken leg in an accidental clash after just 15 minutes. The game was held up for 35 minutes while an ambulance arrived and he was treated before being taken to hospital.
The wind was a major factor as Highgrove created most of the chances in the first half and it was no surprise when Russell Mitchell put them into a half-time lead.
Marsh felt they had done well to restrict Highgrove to the one goal and within minutes of the restart, Marsh were level with a goal by the in-form Lee Sparks.
Marsh piled on the pressure and they took the lead with a goal by Liam Moffatt.
But they then suffered more injury woes when goalkeeper John Lupton had to go off with a shoulder injury after colliding with a Highgrove attacker.
Striker Sparks, who has turned his hand to goalkeeping before, went in to fill the gap and he proved to be an adequate stand-in, denying Highgrove and equaliser late in the game to put Marsh through.
Storeys were too good for a battling Halton Rangers side that had beaten them a few weeks earlier in the league.
On this occasion, Storeys were in no mood to be beaten again with their young midfielder Luke Atkinson impressing.
Halton keeper Ian Pierpoint denied Storeys twice with good saves but they finally took the lead through Steve Stirzaker from close in.
Halton never really tested the Storeys keeper and Stirzaker added a second after the break.
In the Premier Division, Cartmel bounced back after a shock midweek defeat to relegated Swarthmoor SC, by beating Morecambe Hoops 3-1 with Scott Burrows scoring two penalties.
In a great game of football, Ingleton beat Galgate 1-0 for the second time this season while Kirkby Lonsdale beat relegated Caton 2-0.
Swarthmoor lost 3-0 to in-form Morecambe Royals with Chris Morrow scoring twice. Royals also had a good win last Monday when they overcame Highgrove, winning 3-2.
Division One leaders Bowerham won convincingly 6-0 against Torrisholme FC, who are relegated to Division Two. They just could not cope with the pace of the younger Bowerham side who have now secured promotion to the Premier Division.
Second-placed Bentham had a hard first half against Cartmel Reserves but improved after the break to win 3-1 and confirm their promotion to the Premier Division.
There was an exciting game between Grange and Millhead where the lead changed hands several times in a 4-4 draw.
Ingleton Reserves were well worth their 5-2 win over Boys Club while Morecambe Royals Reserves were taught a lesson on how to play football and to score goals when they lost 4-0 to Highgrove Reserves.
Division Two leaders Bolton-le-Sands are really struggling to get to the winning line after being ahead most of the season. They had a chance to win the title on Wednesday but could only draw 1-1 with second-placed Freehold.
Sands had another chance to win the title when they played lowly Slyne-with-Hest (LCC) A but they lost to a single Grant Perkins goal and must now beat Furness Rovers, who beat them a few weeks earlier, to win the title.
Caton United Reserves recent revival deserted them when they lost 5-1 to a confident Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves while Galgate Reserves are relegated to Division Three after losing 4-2 to Furness Rovers.
Freehold FC came through a tricky fixture against Morecambe Cricket Club, keeping their winning sequence going with a 3-1 win with goals from Phil Clements, Richard Simister and James Ainsworth.
Promotion outsiders Overton had a hard game against a good Westgate Wanderers side but came through 1-0 thanks to a late Oliver Wellock goal.
In Division Three, Squires moved up to second place after a titanic game against Bentham Reserves with Squires coming out on top 3-2.
Grange Reserves came through 2-1 at home to Burton Thistle – their first win of the season. Boys Club Reserves won the relegation battle against Arnside Reserves, 2-0.
Last season's champions Bolton-le-Sands Reserves have dropped into the relegation fight after losing again, 4-0 to a rejuvenated Heysham side.
In Division Four, Morecambe Gold returned to the top, after being knocked off in mid-week by a Moghuls win over Ingleton A, but Gold were held to a 3-3 draw by the young Highgrove Colts side. John Cooke scored twice and Justin Doyle for the Colts.
To ensure promotion the Gold must not lose its last game against Millhead Reserves. Moghuls, in second, just need one point from their last four games to gain promotion.
AFC Moorlands, despite beating Ingleton A 2-1 in a close game cannot finish higher than third place in the league.
Heysham Reserves moved out of the bottom two when they comprehensively beat Gregson Reserves 4-0 while Villa Royale put up a good performance to beat College AFC Reserves 3-1.
Bottom team Overton Reserves were involved in the highest scoring game of the day when they lost 6-3 to Morecambe Cricket Club Reserves. Both sides played well but the defences could have done better!
