AN unfamiliar Lancaster City side were beaten by an excellent goal from Dundee captain Stephen O’Donnell in their opening pre-season friendly.
The Dee, who are still to find out whether they will be the side to replace Rangers in the Scottish Premier League next season, opened the scoring when Dolly Blues captain Neil Marshall turned a Ryan Conroy cross into his own net.
City levelled before the break when the impressive Zach Clark burst into the box and his left-foot shot beat veteran former Celtic goalkeeper Rab Douglas via a slight deflection.
Lancaster, in their first game under the new Mick Hoyle and Michael Stringfellow era after it was announced boss Tony Hesketh needs to take three months off for a hip operation, fielded a side with just three names who were regulars at the Giant Axe last season.
The starting eleven featured several former Morecambe players, including Niall Cowperthwaite, who impressed in central defence, and Joe Culshaw, as well as some returning faces such as Rob Wilson and Tom Entwistle.
In a bright opening 45 minutes, Clark was the pick of City’s attacking players and was at his tricky best on an unpredictable surface.
Former AFC Fylde striker Ben Waddington also had a couple of decent openings in the glorious July sunshine that were easily dealt with by Douglas.
The game descended into typical friendly fare in the second half with a host of substitutions ruining the flow of the game, that was until O’Donnell’s sumptuous winner.
City stood off the former Clyde man who curled an excellent shot over the returning Neil Beesley and into the net in front of the healthy travelling support from north of the border.
City are next in action on Tuesday, July 17, when they host Stockport County, who could feature former City players Danny Hattersley and Alex Kenyon in their ranks.
