Jacques ends Coniston threat

ON A damp afternoon Shireshead won the toss and put Coniston in.

The opening pair were out within four overs and with only two runs on the board.

Then Steven Hall (33) was joined by Chris Rouse (8) and together they put on 21 for the third wicket.

He held his end as Rouse departed and David Brackwell (12) came and went.

With Martin Tyson as his new partner, after a spirited display of batting, which included six fours, he sent a long shot into the safe hands of Duncan Singh off the bowling of second change Alex Taylor (2-18) in his second over when the score was 64.

Tyson increased the score gradually despite losses at the other end and was finally trapped leg before in the final over for 23 by Graham Rand who wrapped up the innings, suspended on the second successive wicket of a hat-trick as Colin Tyson was caught at slip by Phil Houghton.

Rand was the pick of the bowlers with the figures of 9.3 overs, 4 maidens and 4 wickets for 15 runs.

He was ably supported by the other bowlers, two of whom were juniors.

In reply, openers Graeme Swindlehurst (19) and Geoff Hornby (11) made a solid start of 24.

After the brief appearance at the wicket of Singh, Phil Houghton was joined by Dipak Garg and together they put on the required runs with stylish and strong strokes.

Houghton’s 38no came off 30 balls in 38 minutes and included eight fours and Garg’s 25no included four fours and one massive six.

The openers, Brackwell (2-35) and David Shaw (1-14), were the most effective of the bowlers.
