Hesketh plots a summer revolution

LANCASTER City manager Tony Hesketh is putting in hard graft behind the scenes this summer to ensure the new season kicks off in style at Giant Axe.

Hesketh is busy tying up contracts and signing new players as well as reorganising his boot room in a bid to lead the club to success next season.

"I am very close to securing deals with Mike Stringfellow, Andy Teague and Mike Rushton," he said.

"They have been targeted by other clubs.

"But I am delighted to say that so far our negotiations are going well and we fully expect all three to be Lancaster City football players at the start of the season.

"Several of our players are attracting the attention of other clubs, but as far as I am concerned that's to be expected because we have some good players.

"Some of the squad have had attractive offers from elsewhere but the early signs are good and the majority of the squad will be with us next season."

While the five new City signings revealed by the Guardian last week – Chris Ward, Jordan Connerton, Rob Henry, Adam Farrell and Roger Sharrock – have yet to put pen to paper, their deals are also likely to be agreed soon.

"It's a very tough summer," Hesketh said. "AFC Fylde are now in our league and by their actions in the transfer market they clearly have intentions of doing well in this league.

"In addition to that, we already have Bamber Bridge, Chorley, Rossendale and Clitheroe all fighting for players in our region.

"But I am certain we will have a very good squad come the new season, which will have a good mix of youth and experience, and that's an important factor if our season is to bear fruit."

The City boss is also revamping the club off the field.

"There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes," Hesketh said. "We have a meeting next week to let people know the structure from within – the first, reserve and youth team set-up and physio roles.

"These things take time but for me it's all about gearing up to the start of the season in the right frame of mind and fitness.

"It's all building up nicely behind the scenes."
