Hesketh delight – but rivals target more Giant Axe stars
LANCASTER City def-ender Neil Marshall has pledged his future to the club.
Marshall, 24, has been at Giant Axe for three seasons and manager Tony Hesketh said he was delighted with the news that he'll be staying longer.
"He'd had a lot of interest from other clubs, most notably from AFC Fylde, but I am very pleased to say he has turned down a better offer from them to stay with us," Hesketh said.
"He's settled extremely well and I am a big fan of his; he certainly wears his heart on his sleeve and he's a true Lancaster lad.
"It's very tempting for some of the lads when they are offered better deals to go and play for the money but I am glad to say he wanted to stay."
Hesketh has yet to finalise his squad for the coming season, but said the signs were promising.
"It's been quite a busy close season for me," he said.
"A lot of interest has been shown in a good number of our players, but we've not lost any except Lee Dodgson, who was always destined to leave the club. I am delighted because as far as I am concerned keeping last year's squad is good progress.
"A lot of places are up for grabs, so it will be important that players are fit and give a good show of themselves in pre-season."
Hesketh believes the fact that so many players are keen to stay at City proves the club is moving in the right direction.
"It says a lot about their ability that other sides are interested," he said.
"Players don't always stay loyal but I think behind the scenes Lancaster has got it right and the players have shown some loyalty.
"We have a good spirit among the players and I don't want to break that; however, it's fair to say there will be some new faces in the squad next season, but that's football."
