Heysham Atoms’ five-month unbeaten run came to an end as they crashed out of the North West Men’s League Open Cup at the quarter-final stage.
They were never in the contest against Premier League Simms Cross from Widnes who ended their streak without defeat that had stretched back to March 9.
The Atoms were smothered by an excellent, well-drilled defensive unit that gave the free-scoring Heysham side very little opportunity to attack.
And when in possession Simms Cross had the ruthlessness to finish off every opportunity.
The Atoms did themselves no favours, giving away too many penalties, but ultimately they were outplayed and out enthused in most facets of play.
On the day Ben Dorrington, Dan Helme and Andrew Collins were the only players to shine for the Atoms and there was an impressive debut from 16-year-old Matty Humpage on the wing in the second period and Jordan Dorrington also impressed from the bench in an otherwise lacklustre performance from the Heysham side.
