Two local junior football referees, Josh Westwood and Edward Hall, were rewarded for their efforts within the local football community when they took charge of the showpiece events in the junior football calendar last weekend.
Josh and Edward, both pupils at Ripley St Thomas Academy took charge of the Lune and District U10 and U9 respective cup finals, played at Morecambe FC’s Globe Arena in front of enthusiastic crowds of supporters.
Both games were close contests with the winners of each emerging in dramatic circumstances.
Edward took charge of the U9’s final between Westgate Wanderers and Highgrove FC, a game which went to extra-time and was won by Westgate with virtually the last kick of the game.
Josh took charge of the U10 final between Heysham Blue Star and Carnforth Rangers, the two sides couldn’t be separated with extra-time and the game was settled on penalties, with Heysham winning it from the spot.
Both young volunteers are qualified FA referees and have been officiating increasingly in the Lune and District League and have quickly made names for themselves as respected referees in the local area and were deserving of such a prestigious occasion.
