MORECAMBE bounced back to winning ways on Saturday with a win over Blue Square Bet Premier side Southport.
Goals from Izak Reid, Nick Fenton and Stewart Drummond helped the Shrimps to victory in glorious sunshine.
The Sandgrounders started well, but no sooner had Steve Akrigg headed against the Morecambe crossbar after a free-kick from John Paul Kissock was saved by Barry Roche, than the visitors went ahead.
Izak Reid was played through by a long ball which beat the Southport defence, with the Morecambe striker sidestepping goalkeeper Tony McMillan and finishing into an empty net.
Morecambe doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, Nick Fenton converting Andy Fleming’s corner with a firm header.
The Shrimps should have increased the scoring earlier, only for Danny Carlton to spurn a free header at the far post.
Gray pulled a goal back four minutes after the interval, pouncing from close range after the Morecambe defence had failed to clear the danger from Matty McGinn’s shot which was stopped by Roche.
Trialist Adam Carden flashed a low shot across the face of goal for the home side.
But then Stewart Drummond scored with an 18-yard chip to restore Morecambe’s two-goal advantage, before Gray netted again with a late penalty after Carden had been fouled by Joe Culshaw.
