Padraig Amond pressed his claim for a spot in the Morecambe starting 11 with both goals in their 3-2 Lancashire Senior FA Cup exit to Blackpool.
The Shrimps’ golden boot winner last season has seen his first-team action limited this campaign but was in fine form during the first round tie at the Globe Arena on Tuesday afternoon.
The Irishman produced two confident finishes for the strong Morecambe side and had further chances to complete his hat-trick but was frustrated as a Blackpool side including a number of first-team players progressed.
The game came to life with four goals in 10 first-half minutes.
Blackpool went ahead with 20 minutes on the clock, Dominic Telford confidently rounding Andreas Arestidou to score.
The Shrimps were level five minutes later however, Amond capitalising on a Charles Dunne error to confidently slot the ball under Pool ‘keeper Elliot Parish when in one-on-one.
But Ishmael Miller restored the visitors’ advantage 60 seconds later, the big number nine outmuscling James Borlase before finishing past Arestidou.
Amond had his second shortly before the half hour as the Shrimps drew level for a second time in quick succession, lashing home a volley from 10 yards after Jack Sampson had chested the ball down in the area.
In an open game both Tom McCready for the Shrimps and Blackpool’s Tom Barkhuizen came close with shots from distance but the game went into the break all square.
The second half continued in much the same vain, McCready firing a volley from distance over before Steve Davies pulled a shot from a tight angle across the face of Arestidou’s goal.
Amond then came close to hat-trick but dragged a chance of hat-trick wide when in on goal seven minutes after the interval.
For Blackpool, goal scorer Telford should have done better but could only bend an effort from 20 yards over the bar while Davies came within inches of poking home a cross from close range shortly after.
Amond then had another chance for a hat-trick shortly before the hour mark but after Sampson had competed for a Ben Thomas cross and the ball dropped to him 10 yards out he scuffed his effort wide.
Davies however made no mistake at other end, hammering the ball home from 15 yards as it broke to him in the box to put Blackpool back in front for a third time.
Amond’s frustration then grew further as he missed a third chance for a hat-trick, Parish rushing out to block his effort one-on-one.
Morecambe continued to push for a leveller but in reality never looked like getting one with substitute Henry Cameron coming close to a fourth for the visitors with a chip that landed on top of the net and Barkhuizen testing Arestidou from range.
