Morecambe Ladies cemented their place at the top of the North West Women’s Regional Premier Division with a 5-2 win over Blackpool Wren Rovers on Sunday.

Megan Doherty scored a hat-trick as Nick Barrett’s side made it seven wins from seven in the league in this top of the table clash.

All five of the hosts’ goals came in the first half, Sophie Fish opening the scoring in the third minute, nodding in the rebound after Doherty’s effort had come back off the bar.

It was 2-0 on nine minutes, Hannah Paling feeding Doherty who lifted the ball over the on-coming Charlotte Leece and ran on to it to stab the ball into the empty net.

Doherty had her second and the Shrimpettes’ third five minutes later, firing home after good work from Melissa Brown.

Morecambe were rampant, Becky Whittingham coming close with a shot from outside the box before Sarah Gardner made it four, heading home Whittingham’s corner.

Doherty then sealed her hat-trick, exchanging a one-two with Whittingham which released her through on goal to make it 5-0 at the break.

Wrens brought some respectability to the score in the second half, substitute Nikki Berko playing a key role.

On for the second period she twisted and turned outside the Morecambe box and threaded a ball through to the unmarked Jodie Hazelhurst whose near-post shot made it 5-1.

The visitors’ tails were up but they could only pull a further goal back in stoppage time, Rachel Warren feeding Hazelhurst who scored her second.
