Ryan Edwards is hoping Morecambe can keep up their record of upsetting League 2’s fancied sides at Oxford United on Saturday.

The Shrimps have a habit of hitting top form against the division’s big guns with the Yellows amongst those expected to challenge for promotion this season.

Edwards said: “Last year (a 1-1 draw) I think we played them off the park in the first half.

“We do that well. We go to teams where people don’t fancy us and get results.

“We’ll be looking to do that again.

“They are one of the fancied sides and people will be looking at Saturday’s result (a 4-2 defeat to Northampton) and people won’t fancy us but it’s up to us.

“It’s how we prepare and how we play.

“If we do things right I don’t think we’ll go far wrong.”

The big central defender believes the loss to The Cobblers last time out was a real shock to the system but something that may benefit The Shrimps in the long run.

Edwards said: “We’d been on a good run.

“Nobody saw it coming. The fans had seen us getting good results and we got back-to-back away wins before coming back home.

“But Saturday was a bit of a wake up call.

“It was probably what we needed.

“We’ve been working hard this week, have looked over it top to bottom and now we want to put it right on Saturday.”

Edwards has been part of an ever-changing back four this season, missing three games himself due to suspension, but the former Blackburn man refused to blame it for recent defensive struggles.

He said: “It’s easy to say that.

“We’re professional footballers, we’re with each other every day.

“So you can’t say ‘I haven’t played with him or him’.

“I don’t agree with that, they’re your team mates who you train with every day and it shouldn’t matter who you play with.

“It was just a bad day at the office.”

Now the defensive unit are more driven than ever to really back up what has been some fine attacking play from The Shrimps this season.

Edwards said: “Everyone’s been doing well this year, especially the front lads.

“As a team and a defence we all want to get a clean sheet and get that run going.”
