MORECAMBE were held to a 1-1 draw in their opening pre-season game away to Raith Rovers.

The Shrimps took the lead with 15 minutes to go when Lewis Alessandra opened his account for the Shrimps, scoring from close range after Danny Carlton’s run and right-wing cross.

Raith equalised five minutes later when John Baird fired past Shrimps substitute ’keeper Shaun Routledge.

Jim Bentley’s side thought they had taken the lead in the first half when defender Nick Fenton, on his Shrimps debut, had a headed goal disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Raith had the majority of the possession in the first half but failed to create much with Williamson coming closest, firing wide from 15 yards.

Gary McDonald, Andy Fleming, Kieran Charnock and Paul Scott missed the game through injury but the majority of the squad who travelled on the four-day tour north of the border played.

There were plenty of new faces for the 51 travelling Shrimps fans to look over, as there were debuts in the starting line up for new signings Izak Reid and goalscorer Alessandra, Fenton, who is training with the club and youth team product Dan Parkinson.

New boss Bentley has vowed to rotate the captain’s armband in pre-season and it was Laurence Wilson, having recently signed a new deal with the club, who took it on this occasion.

Morecambe: Roche (Routledge 45), Cowperthwaite (Mwasile 75), Wilson, Drummond, Fenton (Parrish 75), Haining (McCready 45), Reid (Culshaw 75), Hunter (Breen 80), Alessandra (McGee 80), Jevons (Carlton 35), Parkinson.
