The Shrimps play their opening home game of the season tonight, Tuesday. with newly-promoted York City the visitors.
Gary Mills. Joined the club from Tamworth in October 2010 and guided the club to FA Trophy glory and promotion via the play-offs last year, taking York back to the Football League after eight years away.
One to watch
Jason Walker. Barrow-born former Shrimps front man will be the focal point of the Minstermen’s attack. Visitors will also have another ex-Morecambe man Jonathan Smith in their squad. Wide man Matty Blair was the club’s top scorer last season with 20 goals, getting on the scoresheet in both the Conference play-off and FA Trophy finals. Has missed some of pre-season with a thigh injury though.
The last time the teams met five years ago was a famous night in Morecambe’s history, after a 2-1 victory at Christie Park in the Conference play-off semi-final sent the Shrimps to Wembley where they defeated Exeter to be promoted to the Football League for the first time in their history.
York didn’t have a happy return to the Football League, losing 3-1 at home to Wycombe on the opening day. Similarly to the Shrimps, Minstermen have perfromed better on their travels in recent times however.
