Unbeaten Baines Bagguley Penhale North Lancashire Premier Division Champions Carnforth Rangers crashed to a surprise 3-1 defeat to Caton United in the final of the 848-848-Taxis/Sam Price Memorial Cup at Giant Axe on Monday night.
The last time these two teams met Carnforth won 6-0 and Rangers were by far the better footballing side in the first half.
They only scored the one goal however, Damien Murphy completing a counter attacking move.
Only a brilliant save from Caton ‘keeper John Lupton saved his side from going two goals behind at the break when he tipped a 25-yard goal bound shot over the bar from Byron Nixon.
Caton started the second half much brighter and were level 10 minutes after the restart thanks to some excellent play by man of the match Nathan Jackson.
He shrugged off his marker in the right wing position, cut inside and his thunderous shot beat the Carnforth ‘keeper.
United continued to be the better side although Rangers were always dangerous on their rare forays forward.
It was Caton however who took the lead after 65 minutes when substitute Jordan Sparks out jumped the static Carnforth defence at a corner to score just two minutes after coming on.
Another corner was Carnforth’s undoing 10 minutes later, Jackson doubling his side’s advantage with a header.
The final few minutes were played in Caton’s half but their defence was equal to what Carnforth had to offer as they produced an upset to lift the cup.
