Lancaster City needed three goals in the final 10 minutes to see off struggling Wakefield and record a fifth successive victory at Giant Axe on Saturday.

The game was all square at 2-2 going into the closing stages but Darren Peacock’s side pulled away with the visitors forced to use outfield player Ross Hardaker in goal after an injury to regular stopper Desmond Macorison 10 minutes into the second half.

Wakefield had gone ahead 20 minutes in through a Glenn Steel own goal but Tom Kilifin levelled things up shortly before the break as City were largely frustrated.

But they went ahead four minutes into the second half with Neil Marshall lashing home a half-volley on the turn.

It all appeared to be going City’s way when Macorison went off injured but replacement Joe Turfrey levelled things up with 20 minutes to go, lifting the ball over the advancing Mike Hale as the Dolly Blues failed to deal with a long ball over the top.

Any nerves were settled at Giant Axe however as the hosts made their advantage count, Ryan Winder finishing well on 80 minutes to put them ahead for a second time before substitutes Lee Dodgson and Billy Akrigg made sure of the win as City kept up their fine form in the race for the Evo-Stik First Division North play-off places.
