FORMER Lancaster City striker Dave Swarbrick was on the mark as AFC Fylde comprehensively beat a young Morecambe side on Tuesday.
Swarbrick, City’s top goalscorer last season, opened the scoring in the 4-0 win, with Richie Allen, who bagged a brace, and Ben Waddington the other scorers.
The young Morecambe side, captained by Joe McGee, was complemented by two trialists, wide man Stefan Cox, who had a cameo against Manchester United the previous evening and veteran striker Darren Byfield.
Byfield, who was released by Walsall at the end of last season, struggled to impose himself on the game where as Cox was a threat on both wings.
Swarbrick’s goal came on 38 minutes, a run and shot by another former City man Paul Jarvis was saved by Morecambe keeper Shaun Routledge, but City’s President’s Cup hero was on hand to put in the rebound.
Winger Allen, a second half substitute, doubled the home side’s advantage five minutes into the second period and he then picked up his second just before the hour mark, a blocked shot from Waddington fell into the path of the former Bamber Bridge man who lifted the ball over Routledge and into the net.
Morecambe did come into the game with Sean Breen, Alex Salmon and McGee all having attempts on goal but it was Fylde who scored next to seal the comprehensive win.
With time nearly up Waddington cut in from the left before firing an upstoppable shot past Routledge from just outside the area.
Morecambe: Routledge, Culshaw. Short, Parrish, McCready, McGee, Parkinson, Wainwright, Breen, Byfield, Cox.
