Morecambe FC have joined the football world in paying tribute to the late, great Sir Tom Finney following his death at the age of 91.

The Preston North End great is considered one of Britain’s best ever footballers, making 76 appearances for England between 1946 and 1958, scoring 30 goals.

Sir Tom played at the Shrimps’ Christie Park a number of times in his career and attended several events later in his life.

In 1960 he switched on the club’s new floodlights before playing for an All Star XI against Morecambe.

He also played for an All Star XI later in the year in a game to mark the opening of the club’s new auxiliary club and was guest of honour at the Shrimps’ game against Mansfield in their first season in the Football League.

“One of the proudest moments of my life was walking onto the pitch with him when he the guest of honour at a game.

“He was a true legend and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and everyone at Preston North End.”
