The Shrimpettes dominated the opening period but had to settle for a one-goal lead at the break after Doherty and Holloway in the Macclesfield goal had come face-to-face on a number of occasions.

Doherty saw a shot cleared off the line by Jodie Burgess before Holloway denied Hannah Paling, Jade Thornhill and Sophie Fish with fine saves.

Emma Gardner then saw a goal ruled out for a questionable infringement at the start of the second period with Fish booked for her protests.

It didn’t take Morecambe long to double their lead however as Fish fed Doherty who lobbed the ball over Holloway and into the net.

Macclesfield then had their best chance, Sophie Bracegirdle played a one-two with Jenna Pennell who then raced down the right wing and sent in a fierce low cross which was met by Sophie Thomasson but Killip was there to block it.

Doherty and Millie Brown were then both denied for the Shrimps before Paling played in Doherty who made no mistake for her hat-trick.

Becky Whittingham then made it 4-0 from another Paling pass before Hannah Williamson added a fifth after Brown’s original shot had been parried.

The hosts came close to a consolation after Sophie Cavanagh played in Bex Rowbotham before Emma Reader came out to block. The ball fell to Pannell but she could only shoot high and wide.

It was soon six of the best for the Shrimps as Pendlebury supplied Doherty for her fourth.

Cavanagh was adding spirit to girls in Blue but when she was robbed in her own half by the tenacious Doherty she sent Brown down the right wing and her cross was met by a Killip on the half volley to complete the scoring.
