Bristol Rovers 2-1 Morecambe

MORECAMBE fell to a resurgent Bristol Rovers side on Saturday despite dominating possession for long periods of the game.

Jim Bentley’s side played some fine possession football against Mark McGhee’s outfit with young debutants Chris Kettings and Jordan Burrow producing decent displays.

Morecambe had the better of the first half and went close to opening the scoring on the half hour. Striker Phil Jevons clipped the ball over the advancing Michael Poke after running on to a fine Stewart Drummond ball only to see it bounce against a post before being cleared. From the resulting Garry Hunter corner Jason Price diverted the ball goalwards but Cian Bolger cleared off the line.

The home side made their breakthrough after some poor Shrimps’ defending. Substitute Eliot Richards was allowed to cut in between two defenders unchallenged and deliver a fine cross that took a couple of deflections before Lee Brown turned the ball home from close range at the far post.

The Shrimps were undone a second time on 74 minutes with former Morecambe midfielder Craig Stanley playing in Matthew Lund. Danny Carlton’s clumsy challenge saw Lund fall dramatically but there were few arguments over the penalty decision and McGleish beat Kettings from the spot to give the Shrimps a mountain to climb.

To their credit Morecambe once again battled to the death with teenager Jordan Burrow and top scorer Kevin Ellison giving them a renewed threat.

Ellison grabbed a late goal with his 13th of the season after keeper Michael Poke could only parry Burrow’s shot.

The youngster then teed up Ellison again in injury time with a neat lay off but Poke proved equal to Ellison’s well struck volley and the home side held on to the three points.
