Morecambe boss Jim Bentley hailed Paul Mullin’s four-goal salvo at Nantwich Town on Tuesday night but insisted he still needs a new striker.

The former Liverpool youngster was the star man in the 6-0 win at the Evo-Stik Premier Division side as he underlined his undoubted potential.

But the performance didn’t sway Bentley’s thinking when it comes to finding a replacement for Jack Redshaw.

The Shrimps boss said: “We are looking for a striker but it’s a squad game.

“We brought Mullers in this time last season as a project.

“He’s a 20-year-old lad who we’ve got high hopes for and he’s got a lot of potential.

“He’s proven tonight what a good player he is and last season getting eight league goals in his first season he scored more than quite a few other players in less minutes.

“He’s going to be a good player for us but we do need strength in depth and need another forward because he’s our only out and out striker along with young Jack Kelleher who’s probably not ready to go in every week at first team level.

“All he can do is keep doing what he’s doing and four in 45 minutes is outstanding.”

Overall, Bentley was really pleased with the victory at Nantwich as Kevin Ellison and Aaron Wildig also got on the scoresheet.

The Shrimps boss said: “From the reports Nantwich played very well in their first couple of games against Macclesfield and Crewe.

“You know what you’re getting when you come to the non-league sides, teams full of determination and wanting to prove a point.

“But we acquitted ourselves very well, played some good stuff, looked good on the ball and created chances.

“We conceded one or two chances which we were a little bit disappointed with but overall there were some really good strong performances.

“I know it’s pre-season and we’ve said it doesn’t really matter but the good habits are getting goals on the board and clean sheets.

“I’m really pleased and we’re looking okay.”
