THERE was more heartache at the Globe Arena for Morecambe who suffered their fourth home league defeat of the season on Saturday.
A 94th minute winner from Crewe’s 17-year-old substitute Max Clayton inflicted further agony on the home crowd who have now seen their side win just 10 times in 36 games since leaving Christie Park in a run that continues to baffle everyone.
The game highlighted the best and worst of the Shrimps this year.
The best came with the ultra competitive Kevin Ellison’s opener as he showed great character and determination to beat Matt Tootle to a long clearance and forge a goal for himself on 69 minutes.
Unfortunately the worst came with the two goals the Shrimps conceded.
The all important equaliser 10 minutes later came yet again from a long range shot where no-one took responsibility to close down goalscorer Nick Powell, who beat Barry Roche low to his left.
The second was the conceding of a late goal with the Shrimps now slipping six goals in the last 10 minutes of league games this season which has proved costly.
The game itself was a pretty dreary affair until the final 20 minutes.
The Shrimps tested Steve Phillips just once in the opening half when Danny Carlton’s effort forced a decent block from the keeper after Phil Jevons and Andy Fleming had both sent efforts wide of the target.
At the other end Roche had to save smartly himself from Ajay Leitch-Smith while teen talent Powell caused a number of problems to show why he is so highly rated.
Roche had to be at his best early in the second half again with a superb twisting save to claw away Leitch-Smith’s deflected shot but neither side looked creative enough in front of goal until Ellison sparked the late drama which unfortunately ended with more Globe gloom.
