Marshall comes to rescue as Caton go through on penalties

In the Sam Price Memorial Cup first round Caton United beat Carnforth Rangers on penalties after the two teams couldn’t be separated.

Caton’s best chance fell to Liam Jeffries in the 31st minute t but his snatched shot went well wide of Price’s goal.

The hosts had another good chance 10 minutes later only for Liam Moffatt to head over.

The second half was only a few minutes old when Carnforth were reduced to 10 men after a reckless tackle.

This inspired Carnforth however and within five minutes the usually deadly Damien Murphy had the game’s best chance but his header went well over the bar.

Caton’s Guy Spence forced Ben Price into an excellent one handed save and with 15 minutes remaining a poor clearance from Price fell at the feet of Tommy Lund who fired in a shot from 35 yards, only for Price to regain his ground just as the ball was dipping in.

In the 78th minute Spence had two decent chances, the first going inches wide and the other being smartly saved.

With just five minutes remaining and after soaking up a lot of pressure Carnforth almost sneaked the winner when Cameron Holmes had an excellent chance to score but his effort went wide to send the game to extra-time.

In the last minute of the first period Price came to the rescue of Carnforth again when he made a great saveto deny Spence.

With just three minutes remaining a thunderous 20-yard shot from Lund beat Price all ends up but the ball cannoned off the bar, Moffatt following up headed wide before two more efforts were cleared off the line as the game went to penalties.

Two excellent saves by Lee Marshall saw Caton into the next round and a tie with Bentham.
