Giant Axe attracts bumper crowd

LANCASTER City’s season may be winding down following their President’s Cup win but there is going to be an exciting end to the season in the North Lancashire League.

One of the Giant Axe’s biggest crowds of the season was on hand as Highgrove defeated local rivals Marsh United 1-0 in the final of the Sam Price Memorial Challenge Cup Final and there could be an even bigger crowd for the Black Dragon Senior Challenge Cup final between Storeys and Marsh on Thursday, May 5.

Speaking about the Sam Price Memorial Cup final, North Lancashire league secretary Lawrie Postlethwaite said: “We haven’t had many crowds bigger than that. It was certainly one of the biggest we’ve seen. I wouldn’t like to put a number on how many were there.”

The crowd, of around 300 people, witnessed Marsh, who had beaten table-topping Highgrove in the first round of the Senior Challenge Cup earlier in the season, have plenty of chances, but the only goal of the game was a penalty in the first half of extra-time from Luke Ogley, which gave Highgrove the victory.
