IN THE Lancashire Football Association Amateur Cup fifth round Highgrove, last season’s runners-up in this prestigious county cup competition, failed miserably to progress to the semi-final this time round.
Highgrove probably played their worst football for years when they were annihilated by Southport Amateurs, who in previous rounds had struggled to beat Morecambe Gold before beating Marsh United on penalties.
Despite a promising first half when Highgrove gave as good as they got which ended goalless, the second half saw Highgrove completely outplayed as fitness told. They conceded six goals without reply as the visitors ran out easy winners.
In the Black Dragon Senior Challenge Cup second round, Carnforth Rangers from the Premier Division had a battle against Division Two side Overton and Middleton.
An excellent first half saw the Middleton side play exceptionally well to hold Carnforth to a well deserved 1-1 draw at the break.
Player-manager Vernon Middleton gave Carnforth the lead, only for Overton to surge back to draw level with a well-taken goal scored by Richard Gerrard.
