Lancaster City’s player of the year Danny Gregson has joined Northwich Victoria.

The Dolly Blues’ Evo-Stik First Division North rivals announced the arrival of the defender on Wednesday night despite City’s best attempts to keep him at the club.

The Giant Axe side also made major efforts to keep striker Darren Green, but he announced on Twitter last week he would be joining Gregson at Lee Ashcroft’s side.

It represents a blow for City a week before they return for pre-season training on June 20.

Gregson, a former Myerscough College, cleaned up at the club’s end of season awards after an excellent campaign at the heart of City’s defence.

He could fill the void at Vics left by ex-Dolly Blue Jack Duggan, who has joined Rushall Olympic.

City announced in March Green had committed himself to the club for the coming season amid interest from a host of other clubs.

But the former Bamber Bridge player, who was the first signing by then City managers Neil Wainwright and Michael Stringfellow back in October, has left for pastures new.

Long-serving popular physio Kev McGuffog announced last week he was stepping down from his position at Giant Axe after four years at the club.
