Barnsley 0-2 Morecambe

MORECAMBE boss Jim Bentley was a happy man after his side secured a shock Carling Cup victory.

The new Shrimps boss saw goals from Danny Carlton and Kevin Ellison rock the Tykes with two second-half goals giving Bentley his first win as a manager.

He said: “It was a superb performance and I am so proud of the lads. Barnsley are a good side and put us under a lot of pressure early in the game but we stayed solid and played some good stuff ourselves.

“I always thought we looked dangerous when we went forward and when we went ahead we didn’t really give them anything and held on quite comfortably.

“I was delighted for the two lads who scored as well. Danny didn’t score in pre-season and was getting a bit frustrated but we told him to keep working hard and the results will come while Kevin Ellison has had no action at all.

“He has been in almost every day since picking up an injury just before pre-season and he showed in the few minutes he had tonight exactly what he will bring us.

“It was a great result for us and the fans but we have to now make sure we keep this type of performance up, starting at Hereford on Saturday.”

Carlton opened the scoring five minutes after the break when he slotted home Izak Reid’s right wing cross after Lewis Alessandra’s clever dummy.

Barnsley went close to equalising through a Danny Haynes header that flew inches over the top but the Shrimps sealed the tie four minutes from time when substitute Ellison scored from close range after being found by Carlton.

The home side had the better of the first half with Morecambe keeper Barry Roche making excellent blocks from Jacob Butterfield and Ricardo Vaz Te with the latter missing a golden chance to open the scoring on 35 minutes when he headed over from six yards.

Butterfield looked particularly dangerous and clipped an effort just wide before Morecambe hit back with debutant Gary McDonald firing into the side netting from the left hand side of the box after a good through ball from Alessandra.
