Two teams in last eight of FA Cup
THE Lancashire Football Association Amateur Cup fifth round saw two of our three local teams go into the last eight of this competition out of well over two hundred entrants.
Galgate, promoted from Division One last season, are the shock team.
They have played really well in this competition to progress to the quarter final. Against Shevington United they started brilliantly and scored after just three minutes with a glorious strike from David Green. Shevington United tried to get into the game but Galgate's defence played exceptionally well to deny them.
Galgate were always dangerous going forward but they could not make another breakthrough. In round six Galgate will be away to the winners of the Newburgh United (Wigan) or Mill Hill St Peters (Blackburn).
Marsh United also started brilliantly and 'scored' only for the effort to be ruled out for offside on the linesman flag. Marsh United pressed on looking for the opening but were held at bay by a good Vickerstown defence. Marsh had most of the play in the opening 30 minutes but was indebted to goalkeeper Dawson who made two excellent stops in one on one situations as the speedy Vickerstown forwards broke away.
Marsh United were not allowed to play the football they are used to play by a well organized Vickerstown side.
Neither side managed to make a breakthrough in the first half. Vickerstown improved in the second half forcing Marsh United into making errors in midfield and in defence giving Dawson more work which he did excellently.
Gradually Vickerstown started to take charge of the game and scored twice through Dave Addenbrook and Craig May.
Marsh United could only score once with Lee Marshall scoring a good goal.
So the anticipated quarter final tie with Storeys is not to take place. Storeys were much the better team against the Rawtenstall side Goodshaw United for the first half. The Goodshaw United's strength was in its defence.
Although they did score 10 goals in the last round they could not create any worthwhile chances against a solid Storeys defence with Bob Eccles in top form.
A goal midway through the half scored by Matty Craig gave Storeys a narrow 1-0 lead at half time. Storeys started the second half in a much more determined mood. Within two minutes of the restart Andy Sanderson saw a 35 yards drive flash just over the bar.
The dangerous Steve McQueen also saw a shot go just wide. The play was mostly scrappy and spoilt by a wind which was blowing on Storeys backs. The determination was there for Storeys as they started to take control but the elusive second goal just would not come, Graham Taylor blasting another chance wide of goals.
Goodshaw United's defence was outstanding in the 75th minute when they cleared off the line three times in less than 60 seconds. Goodshaw United almost scored an unlikely equalizer as Storeys defence for once went to sleep, Andy Sanderson was caught as he tried to shield the ball out of play. The Goodshaw player sent the ball into the penalty area where the quick thinking Bob Eccles hoofed the ball clear before an attacker could react to the chance.
Storeys will have to finish more clinically if they hope to beat Vickerstown in the next round.
In the Adam and Gaskell Senior Challenge Cup third round Ingleton deservedly beat Caton United 3-1 but they had to be at their best to do so.
Steve Mounsey opened the scoring for Ingleton followed by Duncan Sullivan and young Tommy Murray but the goal of the game was scored for Caton United by John Longhorn who beat keeper Graham Kellett from fully 30 yards.
The game was excellently controlled by referee Chris Gregory. Ingleton will now meet Storeys in round four.
